Nokia Installation

Installing J2ME applications to the phones can be done in a number of ways:

First you have to transfer the application to your mobile. You can transfer your application to the mobile from PC by making use of data cable, infrared or Bluetooth. You can install the MIDlets either with or without PC Suite.

On Series 40 phones the application gets installed automatically. On S60 phones you need to open message (in the inbox) containing the application and install it manually. However if you use PC Suite to install the MIDlet, the installation process is started automatically on the S60 phones, although you need to step through it manually.

Another way to transfer the MIDlet to the phone is store it (JAR and or JAD file) on a Web server and download the files using the browser of the phone (so called OTA download).

There are some ways to deploy the application into a mobile device

Over-the-Air (OTA)

With OTA deployment, the MIDlet (Java ME application) is installed on a Web server and then downloaded to a device via the device's Internet microbrowser. A JAR file and a JAD file are required for OTA installation. The process begins by browsing to a page that includes a link to a MIDlet suite. The link is then clicked, which causes the Web server to deliver the JAD file for the MIDlet suite to the browser. On receipt of the JAD file, it is opened and its contents are displayed. The JAD file contains a description of the MIDlet suite, including its size, version number, and who provided it. A request is then sent for the JAR file and, finally, the Web server delivers the JAR file. Once the JAR file has been delivered to the device, the suite is installed and individual MIDlets can be selected and run.
Infrared and Bluetooth

IR or Bluetooth, USB cable

technology can be used to send the MIDlet from a PC to another device===Installing over a serial cable(or USB cable)=== If the device has a serial cable port and connectivity software for a PC, the MIDlet can be installed on the device over a serial cable.

Motorola Installation

There are a few ways to install java applications into Motorola P2K mobile phones.

Install via bluetooth

This is the simplest way, provided you have setup bluetooth connectivity between your phone and your PC/Mac. Mac has build-in support for bluetooth and it can support most of the Motorola phones. All you need to do is download the jar file from the internet to your PC/Mac, then send the jar file to your mobile phone via bluetooth. Your phone will recognize the jar file and install it automatically. Of course you have choice to install it in phone memory or TF card, if there is TF card in your phone. (Read how to set up bluetooth mobile phone on mac, if you haven't set up your phone yet.)

Using Java App Loader & Midway, via USB cable

1. You need to enable the "Java App Loader" function in Java Setting. It can be enabled by editing the following seem:
SEEM 0032-0001: offset 43 - bit 0: Settings > Java Settings > Java App Loader (1 on, 0 off)
(It is enabled if you are using my MP. Read my SEEM edit guide if not sure how to edit the SEEM.)
2. Get the software "Midway", which you can get from Motorola's website. Install it. (It is for PC only)
3. Now go to Java Setting in your phone and select "Java App Loader".
4. Connect your phone to your PC via USB cable.
5. Open Midway, select the jad file, then send it to your phone.
6. After file transfer is completed, it will be installed in your phone automatically.

Install in TF card, via USB cable

1. Set "Default connection" of "USB setting" to "memory card".
2. Connect your phone to your PC via USB cable. Your phone will be recognized as a removable hard drive.
3. Copy the jar file from PC/Mac to /mobile/kjava directory of the removable drive.
4. Go to "Games & Apps" menu for Memory card, then select "[install new]".
5. Then select the games/apps to install.

The above methods won't work if special permission is required to run the games/apps. You can grant permission using MotoMidMan.

Install using Moto Midlet Manager (MotoMidMan)

MotoMidMan is a free software, download and install it. You must also have installed the driver for Motorola P2K phone. By default MotoMidMan will grant full permission for the games/apps installed using MotoMidMan. MotoMidMan is very easy to use, so just download and use it. If your java apps has a jad & a jar file, select install jad file. Otherwise, select install jar file.

If you have a new phone model, you may see "unsupported platform cant continue" when using motomidman. One possible solution is to check your S/W version, then add the version into "model2" in the motomidman.ini file. For example, your S/W version is R452B_G_08.02_08R. You can add R452B to Mode2 in MotoMidMan.ini file, as follows:

Generate JAD file using JADMaker

Most of the java j2me apps packages come with both JAD & JAR file, but some of them have only the JAR file. To generate the JAD file, you can use a program "JADMaker" to do it. Just open JADMaker, then drag the JAR file into the JADMaker's window, the JAD file will be generated in the same location as the JAR file.

BlackBerry Installation

Requirements

1. *.alx and *.cod files
2. BlackBerry Desktop Manager, can be downloaded from here https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22
   In this case, v4.7 was used, other higher or lower edition can also be used, depend on the devices

Steps

• 1. Install BlackBerry Desktop Manager on your operation system, maybe need restart
• 2. Connect device with your PC with USB cable
• 3. Open Programs->BlackBerry->Desktop Manger
• 4. Choose Application Loader in Main Menu

• 5. Choose Add/Remove Applications

• 6. Click Browse to select the *.alx file in your PC, the applications will be listed in the window

• 7. Select the application and click Next

• 8. Then click Finish to install the application on your device, wait few minutes, the device could be reset.
  If there is no error message in Desktop Manager, application will be installed in the device.

Update / Remove Application

if you have new version of application, you need remove the old application from device and install the new version.
Please un-check the application in the following interface, the Action of application will be "Remove", then click Next to remove the old version.

After removing the old version, now you can install the new version of application

 

LG Installation

I. Install application via USB

Requirements:

• Latest BitPim software from www.bitpim.org (tested with 1.0.2)
• LG phone tools software (provided in box)
• USB cable

Unlocked Java Restrictions

Instructions:

• 1. Install software listed above
• 2. Hook up phone
• 3. Launch BitPim
• 4. BitPim should show "Other CDMA phone on COMx" (where x is the COM port being used)
• 5. Choose Edit, Settings
• 6. Change Phone Type to "LG-VX8700" (this is the CDMA version Shine)
• 7. Click OK to close
• 8. Choose View, View Filesystem
• 9. Click the Filesystem icon
• 10. Click the expand button beside "/"
• 11. It will say "Retrieving" for a minute or two
• 12. Expand to the following directory: /LGAPP/Media/Java/cert
• 13. Right-click on the file "rogers.pol" and select "Save ...", then save it to a location on your computer
• 14. MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF THE ORIGINAL FILE (just in case!)
• 15. Open the file with WordPad or another editor (Notepad does not display it correctly, not recommended)
• 16. You will notice the file is in sections. Go to the end of the file to the section headed by "domain: untrusted"
• 17. Delete everything under that header (but leave the header alone), and replace it with everything copied from the section "domain: C=CA;O=Rogers Wireless;CN=Rogers Wireless Test Root CA"
• 18. Save your changes (you did make a backup, right?)
• 19. Back in BitPim, right-click on the "cert" folder and select "New File ..."
• 20. Select the new "rogers.pol" file you modified, and overwrite the existing file
• 21. Disconnect and reboot the phone, you're all set to go!

A few more things you might be interested in:

• You will need to re-install existing applications. The security seems to be set at install time, so whatever apps you have installed you should remove and re-install.
• Proof that Rogers is evil - look at the cingular.pol file. It allows for application signed by any trusted source. The rogers.pol file only allows for apps signed by Rogers. This goes well beyond just wanting to protect the customer from bad applications!
• This edit makes the phone completely trust any java application, so make sure you know what you're installing before you install it!

Install Java Application

• 1) Unlock your java restrictions if you haven't already.
• 2) Find a .jar file you would like to install onto your shine
• 3) Find the .jad file that goes with that game/app.
• 4) Run BitPim (as detailed here)
• 5) Navigate to "/LGAPP/Media/Java/ams/" folder.
• 6) Pick one of the currently installed lame demo games that you don't want (M004 is Millionaire, the one I chose)
• 7) Rename your Game files .jar file "jar" and your .jad file "jad"
• 8) Backup the jad and jar files in the folder you have chosen
• 9) Replace your new game files with the old ones
• 10) Go to the Games folder using your phone
• 11) Run the game you've overwritten (You will probably have to run it twice)
• 12) Enjoy your game.

II. Install application via Internet

• 1) Unlock your java restrictions if you haven't already.
• 2) Download application on mobabel.net in your PC till the last step.
• 3) From your Shine's Web Browser (tested with Rogers Browser; still to try with Opera Mini): Navigate to http://www.mobabel.net/modms/g/xxxxx, this link you will get it in the last step of downloading
• 4) When the file has downloaded your phone will ask you for a confirmation if you wish to install the java app; obviously choose continue and continue on with the installation!

Other method:

Installing Java games on your LG U400 is possible with either:
The install games with LG Phone Manager, follow these steps:

• Go to the "Games & Apps->Settings" section of your mobile and key in:
  3698#*#
• You must now select "Disable" to enable uploading of Java games.
• Once this is complete, a Java folder will be shown when you browse the contents of your mobile with LG Phone Manager.
• To install a game you must rename the JAR and JAD files to numbered files, eg:
  05.jar
  05.jad
• To install the game in 5th position. You should not install one game over the top of another.
• Once you have uploaded your renamed files, simply go to you games list on your mobile and your uploaded game will be installed.

Samsung Installation

The method here is rather straightforward. It has been tested on my two D500 phones without a single problem

• 1. Download and install Softick PPP from here. The software is designed for Palm users, so if you receive any error messages such as unable to locate USBPORT.dll, just ignore them.
• 2. Active your IR connection or hook your USB cable into the phone.
  For IR users, you need to active the IR connection on both of your laptop and D500, and approach the laptop with your D500 to let it find the phone prior to any transferring.
  For USB connection, the one I tested is from fonefunshop
• 3. Start Softick PPP, and check if it has your connection in its 'Settings->Bluetooth/Serial'. Active it if done.
• 4. Run 'Uploader.exe' program and add a jad file.
• 5. Enable Serial Java download - #*536963#.
• 6. Enter Serial Java menu #*5737425#, and choose USB from "1 PPP UP'. Please bear in mind, just do it once for each switch on/off!
  Select second option - "2.Serial Download"
• 7. Let upload and softick PPP access the net if you installed a firewall.

More details

Using USB cable

• 1. deactive Softick PPP, and exit it.
• 2. connect the cable,
• 3. run Samsung's PIM & File Manager to make sure that you get connected. If not, please switch off and on your mobile and try it again.
• 4. run Softick PPP
• 5. go to it's 'Settings->Bluetooth/Serial' to check if it has a connection such as COM7 \Device\ss_mdm0. If so, select it, otherwise exit the Softick PPP and go back to the first step. (you may find the proper COM setting from the windows device manager->modems->Samsung Mobile USB modem)



• 6. active Softick PPP.
• 7. run Uploader.exe
• 8. ......

For IR users

• 1. deactive Softick PPP, and exit it.
• 2. active your IR connection
• 3. approach your phone to the laptop, and make sure there displays an icon in your tray area and it gives a message 'there is a device around....'
• 4. run Samsung's PIM & File Manager to make sure that you get connected via IR. If not, please switch off and on your mobile and try it again.
• 5. run Softick PPP.
• 6. enable IRDA interface support in 'Settings->Options'
• 7. go to it's 'Settings->Bluetooth/Serial' to check if it includes a connection such as 'COM4 \Device\0000010b', if not, go back to the first step
• 8 ....

please choose USB in '1 PPP UP' for your IR connection

If you do see the progress bar but the phone freezes for a couple of seconds and then it reboots itself, it may mean that the connection is all right, but the Softick PPP is not actived or your device is not ticked in settings.

Please also check your firewall settings to let Softick PPP and uploaded.exe access the net and act as a server.

If the mobile crashes

• 1. switch off/on the mobile
• 2. deactive Softick PPP.
• 3. !!!!! ---- disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it. ---- !!!!!!
• 4. start EasyStudio to check if the computer can find your mobile.
• 5. active Softick PPP

now you can upload Java apps again.

Smartphone Installation

Not all Smartphones have embedded Java emulator, you still can use our Java applications after you installed Java emulator on your Smartphones.

DMIDP2

JAVA simulator -DMIDP2 could be one good choice.
You can download from here:

After download, copy it into your Smartphone, for Jad and Jar files, you need set the file association in File Explorer.

Then select Menu->Browse Folder

Select the path where DMIDP2 has been installed, open it and the exe will be listed.

Choose DMIDP2，click Select, then select Done.

Now once you download Java application and just click the Jad or Jar files, system will call DMIDP2 to install Java application automatically.

Sony Ericsson Installation

There are 2 ways to install applicaiton on Sony Ericsson mobile phones:

• 1. Download from the web onto your PC, then upload onto your phone
• 2. Install directly Over The Air (OTA) via WAP

Download Sony Ericsson PC Suite from sony-ericsson home page.

Select your phone type and then select PC Suite in the Software overview list.
After installation, open it and connect your phone with PC using USB cable.

Upload the jad and jar files to the "Others" directory in the mobile phone. Then you need install the application manually, you will find the application in the "Application" or "Games" directory, depending on which directory you have selected during the installation as target directory.

Window Mobile PDA Installation

I. For Windows Mobile 5.0:

Microsoft hasn’t included JavaJVM with the Windows Mobile 5.0 platform nor does Sun Micro provide any support for Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone devices.

You have three choices:

This is the best Java Manager I have tested on WM system, no crash, support full-screen running, fast and easy to use. You can install it also on WM6, I recommend you it strongly!

Seconds: IBM WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment

IBM offers a software called WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment which emulates Connected, Limited Device Configuration (CLDC 1.0 and 1.1) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP 2.0) for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. Here’s how you can install Java J2ME applications on your mobile device:

• 1) Go to the downloads section for WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment
• 2) Depending on your version of Windows Mobile 5, download the installer (weme-win-x86-xxxxx.exe),now is not free for downloading, you must ask the local IBM support center for that, or buy it.
• 3) Extract and then copy the folders [bin, lib and examples] extracted from weme-win-x86-foundationxxxxxxxxx.zip to a folder in the root of your mobile device
• 4) On the mobile device, run the emulator exe (j9.exe) from the Bin folder and give the direct path of the Jar or Jad file (whether local or on a website)
• 5) After the Midlet is installed, tap on the Midlet to run it

You should be able to run any Java based Application/Game on your Windows mobile device. But as tested, the app crashed often and I can not set more memory for it and it can not run application in full-screen mode.

Select one packet in the list to call the operation menu, you can update, modify, delete or view the status in native browser. Some express companies need Capatcha validation. And you can choose to display the detail screen. You can send the status to anyone via SMS and Email, and view parcel position in map.
